Algeria: U.S. Willing to Help Algeria Diversify Its Economy, American Official Stresses

US Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Charles Rivkin underscored Monday the willingness of the US to support Algeria in its economic diversification process.

"I am here (in Algeria) to try to find ways to boost economic affairs between the two countries. We will also try to help the Algerian government to diversify the economy," said Rivkin in interview with APS on the sidelines of an Algerian-American business meeting.

Rivkin, which leads with the US Secretary of State assistant for Near Eastern Affairs Anne Patterson, a delegation of thirty American businessmen, hoped to boost Algerian-American economic relations through new partnerships in different sectors.

"There are many sectors of the Algerian economy that interest US companies, including infrastructure, agriculture, telecommunications, energy and transport," he said.

He also noted the unprecedented level of Algerian imports from the United States in 2014, which amounted USD 2.6 billion, i.e. up 45%.

US companies working in the pharmaceutical industry also show great interest in the opportunities offered by the Algerian market in this sector, the US official stressed.

"US pharmaceutical industry operators are very interested in the Algerian market and could work well here in Algeria," he argues, while noting the importance given by US investors to the protection of industrial property rights.
