[Ghana] Accra brewery limited inuagurates $100 million plant

Accra Brewery Limited (ABL) has inaugurated its new plants to double its production capacity and increase product lines at a cost of US$100million.

The inaugurated US$100million project includes the construction of two new state-of-the art packaging lines, a new warehouse and material storage area, as well as a waste-treatment plant and electricity sub-station including s vehicle workshop and an ultra-modern office complex.
The expansion work which was not completed with the inauguration of the new plant is also expected to include in the future the setting up of a waste-water treatment plant fitted with yeast-digester in line with SABMiller’s ten sustainable development priorities to treat all emissions and to protect the environment, conserve water and meet statutory standards.

The brewer has also increased its use of locally-produced raw materials — especially sorghum, maize, cassava and rice — in the production of some of the company’s product lines which will see no shortage of Ghana’s favorite beer Club Beer.

Speaking to Citi Business News at the sidelines of the inauguration, Managing Director Anthony Grendon said opening the plant for production means increased use of local raw materials with the company’s commitment to accelerate growth and development in the country through support for local Ghanaian ventures.

“ABL as a subsidiary of SABMiller believes deeply in the principle of sustainable development, whereby through its actions it enhances and promotes the livelihoods of local communities. This is going to see our beers become the natural choices for the responsible and moderate drinker, while accelerating growth and social development in Ghana through our value chains and support for local Ghanaian enterprise.”

Speaking on behalf of the President John Dramani Mahama, Minister of Trade and Industry Dr. Ekow Spio Grabbah, at the ceremony said the plant is an important milestone even in these hard times and the intense power crisis.

He said the company has grown year on year, and applauded it for being continually innovative even after eight decades of establishment.

The Minister of Trade commended the parent company, SABMiller, for the expansion and the innovation to continue production having set up their own source of electricity.

With the introduction of this plant, the company will support about 20,000 jobs in the economy while employing some over 100 Ghanaians.
