Malawi, EU sign €560m deal

Malawi and the European Union (EU) on Monday signed a financial agreement amounting to €560 million to guide cooperation under the National Indicative Programme (NIP) until 2020. The cooperation will focus on three areas of governance, Agriculture and Education on secondary and vocational training.

EU Commissioner for International Development and Cooperation, Neven Mimica said the agreement is an important step forward in the strong partnership between EU and Malawi.

“The funding will help Malawi to move towards sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction. EU will continue working with government, Civil Society and the private sector to strengthen the country’s capacities and long term development,” he said.

Malawian Minister of Finance Goodall Gondwe thanked the EU for their continued support to Malawi.

“This is an important milestone for Malawi. These funds will be used for the intended purposes,” he assured.

NIP will guide the formulation and implementation of the projects financed by the 11th EU Development Fund.
