Namibian President wins 2015 Mo Ibrahim Foundation Prize

President Hifikepunye Pohamba has been named as the winner of the 2014 Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership. During President Pohamba’s tenure, according to the Foundation, Namibia has shown improvement in 10 out of 14 sub-categories of the IIAG, thus merits the award.

Founder of the MIF Prize, addressing the press, says he believes that such an prestigious prize, makes a difference in governance as well as African leadership excellence.

This is the first time, the award has been claimed in five years.

 The Mo Ibrahim Foundation Prize committee is currently hosting a live Q&A event live from Nairobi, Kenya.  Issues discussed on African leadership and what really is the criteria that determines the winner of the prestigious award.

 President Pohamba has served two terms in his country after rising to presidency from being a rebel leader. Pohamba is also a  recipient of the Ongulumbashe Medal for Bravery and Long Service.

 Hitherto, President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday met the Mo Ibrahim Foundation board and prize committee members who paid him a courtesy call at State House, Nairobi.

President Kenyatta and the Mo Ibrahim Foundation delegation discussed a wide range of issues of national importance including governance and security.

The delegation was led by the foundation’s founder and chair, Dr Mo Ibrahim. He was accompanied by the former President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari, former Tanzanian Prime Minister Salim Ahmed Salim and former Botswana President Ketumile Masire among other board and prize committee members.

The foundation – established in 2006 – provides tools to support progress in leadership and governance to promote Africa’s transformation.

President Kenyatta said while the Government has improved security in the country, the situation at the regional level remained fragile because of the conflicts in South Sudan and Somalia.
