[South Africa] Nedbank Invests in the Future

Nedbank donated uniforms, shoes, stationery, mobile libraries and labs as well as soccer kit to over 200 children from Ngwekazi Senior Secondary and Barkerville Primary School in Mount Frere, Eastern Cape through its Back to School Campaign. Initiated in 2010, the campaign, which forms part of Nedbank’s holistic education programme called Fundisa, has invested over R11 million to more than 10000 learners’ uniforms, shoes and stationery.

One of the beneficiaries, Mzuxolo Gagashe, a matriculant from Ngwekazi Senior Secondary School said: "The school uniform, shoes and stationery I received will enable me to focus more on my studies while the mobile library and labs will help me and fellow learners to prepare better for matric exams."

Nedbank’s Fundisa programme aims to build effective schools through infrastructure development, teacher training, building leadership capacity and providing classroom-based support. The bank has also been contributing to the improvement of education outcomes for learners in Grade 9 - 12 through its career guidance programme My Future My Career and the Matric Revision Programme, which form part of Fundisa.

"As a bank for all, Nedbank is highly in the communities it serves. We partner with government, civil society and communities to contribute to the goals of the National Development Plan. Education is a key Corporate Social Investment (CSI) focus area for Nedbank as it contributes towards a strong and flourishing knowledge-based economy," said Kone Gugushe, Divisional Executive for CSI at Nedbank. "We believe that investing in children will create a better society for all of us."

The bank encourages all people in South Africa to contribute towards the campaign by smsing the word ’school’ to 40017 to donate towards stationery, uniforms and shoes.
